Club Training

Whether you're new to fell running, an experienced competitor, or simply looking for a friendly group of like-minded runners to train with, Mercia Fell Runners welcomes runners of all abilities. The club offers access to a diverse calendar of fell races throughout the summer and winter, along with structured training designed to help members build fitness, confidence and off-road running skills.

Our experienced coaching team delivers regular, coach-led sessions throughout the year. Training is designed to develop the key skills needed for fell and trail running, including climbing, descending, technical terrain, pacing and race-specific fitness.

Thursday Wrekin Training

Our weekly coached session takes place every Thursday evening on The Wrekin, near Telford. We meet at 7:15pm at the bottom of the main path, easily accessed from Junction 7 of the M54.

Sessions make full use of the varied terrain around The Wrekin, allowing runners to experience different gradients and technical trails in a structured environment. During the lighter summer months, additional emphasis is placed on downhill technique to help prepare runners for the fell racing season.

What You'll Need

Suitable off-road footwear with good grip is essential for all training sessions, along with clothing appropriate for the weather conditions. Between September and April, runners should also bring a reliable headtorch with spare batteries.

The equipment required for fell races varies depending on the event and weather conditions. Full details of mandatory kit can be found on the Fell Runners Association (FRA) website.

Joining a Session

If you'd like to attend a Thursday training session for the first time, please get in touch beforehand so that the coaching team knows to expect you and can ensure you're looked after.

For information about other informal group runs across Shropshire, please visit the Shropshire Fell Running Facebook page. These are community-organised runs rather than official Mercia Fell Runners training sessions, and participants attend at their own risk.
